SUMMARY:Book Launch: Transitional Shakespeare\, Gender and Adaption
LOCATION:Duques Hall 361\, 2201 G Street NW\, Washington DC 20052
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a book launch celebrating Professor of English Ale
xa Alice Joubin's new book\, Transitional Shakespeare\, Gender\, and Adap
tion.\n\nAbout the Book\nThe cross-gender role is a staple of Shakespeare
’s plays\, and drama is a transitional art. Gender is made flesh and brou
ght into being by actors’ embodiment. Similarly\, adaptations also operat
e transitionally. Some adaptations translate narratives into hospitable f
orms of expression. Other adaptations function as minor uses of establish
ed genres and gender categories.\n\nIn Transitional Shakespeare\, Gender\
, and Adaption\, Professor Alexa Alice Joubin\, PhD\, theorizes “transnes
s” in a number of modes\, including composite figures in drama that arise
from the convergence of a character\, their curated self-image\, and act
ors’ performance\; cultural translation\; stagecraft onscreen\; and drama
as processes of social assemblage. Joubin close-reads a number of films\
, such as Stage Beauty (2004)\, As We Like It (Taiwan\, 2001)\, The King
and the Clown ( South Korea\, 2005)\, She’s the Man (2006) and Shakespear
e in Love (1998).\n\nRSVP online >>\n\nThis event is co-sponsored by the
Women's\, Gender\, and Sexuality Studies Program and the Department of En
 glish.\n\nhttp://next-to-u.app/events/c8dc2259-ce90-4c4b-a0df-3eeecf490f6
