SUMMARY:CCS Seminar: Joshua Buss (Univ. of Michigan)
LOCATION:Baker Lab 119\, 259 East Ave\, Ithaca\, NY 14850\, USA
DESCRIPTION:Cartography with Clusters: Mapping Surface Science Mechanisms
with Atomic Precision\n\nAbstract: The most important global chemical pro
cesses rely on multimetallic catalysts that facilitate difficult bond mak
ing and bond breaking transformations. Many of these catalysts take the f
orm of evolutionarily optimized enzymatic machinery\, while equally vital
are engineered heterogeneous catalysts used in large-scale industrial ch
emical transformations. A significant challenge in optimizing existing ca
talysts and discovering or designing new ones is the lack of fundamental
mechanistic understanding of the elementary chemical processes taking pla
ce at the active site. My research group addresses this knowledge gap by
employing inorganic synthesis to prepare and study multimetallic complexe
s that adopt design features prevalent in both industrial and enzymatic c
atalysis. This talk will describe the synthesis of an unusual\, low-valen
t multicopper cluster that serves as a soluble fragment of crystalline Cu
(111). Studies investigating small molecule binding and activation\, as t
hey pertain to substrate adsorption and chemisorption\, are presented. Th
is platform also facilitates surface-like catalytic transformations of NO
x reagents\, unsaturated hydrocarbons\, and carbon oxygenates. These chem
istries\, including insights into their respective mechanisms\, will be c
ompared to prevailing mechanistic proposals in surface science.\n\n*This
event is supported by\, and is part of\, the Passer Lecture Serie\n\nhttp
