SUMMARY:Thirty-Ninth Annual Frederick Kaufman Memorial Lecture Day 1
LOCATION:Chevron Science Center 150\, 219 Parkman Avenue\, Pittsburgh\, PA
  15260
DESCRIPTION:This year's Kaufman Memorial Lecture speaker is Prof. Mark Joh
nson\, Yale University.\n\nTitle: Decoding the spectral signatures of “ex
cess” proton speciation and transport kinetics in water with cryogenic io
n chemistry and spectroscopy\n\nAbstract: Understanding the properties of
protons released into water at the molecular level has proven to be surp
risingly challenging. This occurs because the positively charged entity t
hat is formed occurs with variable spatial extent surrounding a defect in
the interlocking OH bonds that knit together the extended hydrogen bonde
d network. This talk will describe how these local structures were captur
ed and characterized using specially designed experimental methods to iso
late the vibrational spectra of specific molecular compositions at very l
ow temperature. These instruments integrate cryogenic ion trapping techni
ques with mass spectrometry and laser spectroscopy. Once the structural i
nformation encoded in cold ion spectra was established\, a second generat
ion of experiments\, one that is currently on-going\, evolved that follow
the kinetics of long-range proton migration\, mediated by a precisely co
ntrolled number of water molecules. Simulations of this process\, now anc
hored to experimental benchmarks\, provide a microscopic picture of the “
proton relay” paradigm envisioned long ago by Grotthuss and widely invoke
d to rationalize charge transport in aqueous media.\n\nBio: This year's s
peaker will be Prof. Mark Johnson\, Arthur T. Kemp Professor of C\n\nhttp
