LOCATION:Kroch Library (Olin B2) 2B48\, Olin Library\, Ithaca\, NY 14850\,

DESCRIPTION:This lecture will be held in Kroch Library (Olin B2) 2B48.\n\n
Laurent Ferri\, "A Portrait of Atanasius Kircher as a Jesuit Scholar\, Te
 acher\, Machine-Maker\, Courtier\, Museum Curator\, Best-Selling Author —
  and\, Possibly\, Charlatan"\n\nCarmel Raz\, ‘Ossianic Sounds’: Berlioz o
n Memory\n\nOrganized by Patricia García Gil and Laurent Ferri\, this sym
posium explores the extraordinary sonic universe of Athanasius Kircher (1
602–1680)\, the Jesuit polymath whose investigations brought together\, m
 athematics\, music\, acoustics\, natural philosophy\, history\, archeolog
 y\, technology\, and of course religion. Through lectures\, performances\
, demonstrations\, and an experimental “musical salon”\, we will explore
 his fascination with fantastical instruments\, music-generating machines\
, algorithmic composition\, and music's capacity to affect the human body
and emotions. From wind-activated harps and water-power organs to mechan
ical instruments and early systems of automated composition\, Kircher's e
xpansive conception of sound invites us to reconsider the boundaries betw
een human\, animal\, natural\, and machine-generated music. His work also
opens conversations about cultural encounters\, missionary ambitions\, a
nd the circulation of knowledge\, while raising questions that resonate w
ith contemporary debates on artificial intelligence\, creativity\, and mu
 sical authorship\n\nhttp://next-to-u.app/events/d247fa07-9cec-453c-95e1-4
