SUMMARY:The People Could Fly: Black Religion\, Spirituality and Liberation
LOCATION:Old College Hall Old College West Gallery\, Old College Hall\, Un
 iversity of Delaware\, Newark\, DE 19711\, USA
DESCRIPTION:The title story from Virginia Hamilton’s 1986 collection of fo
lktales\, The People Could Fly\, explores the legend of the flying Africa
ns. These supernatural figures\, who have appeared in narratives across t
he dispersion of people whose homeland is Africa or the diaspora\, are of
ten understood as a reflection of a longing to return “home.” In these in
stances\, home can be many places: ancestral lands\, the afterlife\, or s
ome fictional space associated with the possibility of freedom. In some c
ontexts\, the flying African is seen as a spiritual or religious icon\, w
hile in others they find ways to fight injustice through their flight. Th
is exhibition borrows Hamilton’s language in an effort to explore connect
ions between African diasporic spiritual and religious practices and a co
llective desire for liberation.\n\nExploring a range of visual and materi
al culture\, The People Could Fly surveys art that represents American\,
Caribbean\, and African spiritual traditions while simultaneously intertw
ining themes of Black liberty across time and space. Together\, these wor
ks understand the multifaceted range of Black religious traditions as jou
rneys to a present or eventual spiritual home where a shared freedom can
be enjoyed. Exploring the impact of these cultural phenomena\, this exhib
ition will traverse an expansive range of traditions\, including indigeno
 us African spirituality\, Voodoo\, Islam\, and Christianity. Ultimately\,
these works not only honor the multifaceted nature of Black religions\,
