SUMMARY:“Beauties of My Style”: Errata and the Printed Mistake
LOCATION:Sterling Memorial Library Hanke Gallery\, 120 High Street\, New H
 aven\, CT 06511
DESCRIPTION:“Beauties of My Style” will be on view at the Hanke Gallery wi
thin Sterling Memorial Library from March 30 - Nov. 29.\n\nErrors have al
ways been part of bookmaking\, but with the arrival of the printing press
\, they became formally acknowledged through the device of the errata lis
 t. From the late fifteenth century onward\, printers and authors compiled
lists of “faults escaped” or “errors committed\,” often with justificati
ons and apologies\, which were added to books as either tipped-in slips o
r additional sheets at the end. “‘Beauties of My Style’: Errata and the P
rinted Mistake” surveys errata alongside their companion texts from acros
s nearly half a millennium\, chronicling themes of censorship\, misrepres
entation\, intervention\, and instability tied to the written word.\n\nTh
e title of the exhibition derives from a statement by James Joyce\, writt
en shortly before the release of Ulysses: “These are not misprints but be
auties of my style hitherto undreamt of.” The exhibition\, which is organ
ized thematically\, encompasses thousands of these “beauties” across appr
oximately 30 works\, ranging from maps with inaccurate geographies and de
tails\, to religious texts in which typographic errors were seized upon a
s proof of heresy\, to mid-run book corrections reflecting textual variat
ions within one edition.\n\nCurators: Rachel Churner\, lecturer in Visual
Studies\, New School\, and director of the Carolee Schneemann Foundation
\; Geoff Kaplan\, lecturer in Graphic Design\, Yale School of Art\, and f
 ounder\n\nhttp://next-to-u.app/events/d62f85ac-e8fb-4dc6-9f4e-afc6449f4ab
