SUMMARY:INPP Seminar - Barak Schmookler\, University of Houston
LOCATION:Living Learning Center 102/104\, 111 South Green Drive\, Athens\,
  Ohio 45701
DESCRIPTION:Imaging the Structure of Visible Matter: From Fixed-Target Sca
ttering to the Electron-Ion Collider\n\nUnderstanding how the observed pr
operties of visible matter emerge from the interactions of quarks and glu
ons is a fundamental question in nuclear physics. Fixed-target lepton-sca
ttering experiments at Jefferson Lab and elsewhere\, together with polari
zed proton-proton collider experiments at RHIC\, have provided increasing
ly detailed information about the three-dimensional and spin-dependent st
ructure of the nucleon\, particularly in the valence-quark region. The fu
ture Electron-Ion Collider (EIC)\, with its variable center-of-mass energ
y\, high luminosity\, polarized beams\, and range of nuclear targets\, wi
ll provide unprecedented access to the gluon and sea-quark structure of n
ucleons and nuclei. Its realization will open a new era of precision QCD
measurements.\n\nIn this talk\, I will review how measurements from fixed
-target and collider experiments have shaped our current understanding of
nucleon structure\, highlighting the complementary information provided
by different experimental approaches and kinematic regimes. I will then d
iscuss the rich physics opportunities at the EIC\, including the three-di
mensional structure of nucleons and nuclei\, the role of gluons and sea q
uarks\, and the emergence of nucleon and nuclear properties from QCD. Fin
ally\, I will discuss the detector technologies and experimental techniqu
es required to realize these precision measurements.\n\nhttp://next-to-u.
