SUMMARY:Physics Colloquium: "How to Connect Quantum Computers"
LOCATION:Physics Building 202/204\, 140 Sims Drive\, Syracuse NY 13210
DESCRIPTION:Please join the Department of Physics in welcoming Samuel Schw
ab\, Research Physicist at Air Force Research Laboratory\, for his talk t
itled\, "How to connect quantum computers."\n\nSam is a research physicis
t at the Air Force Research Laboratory where he focuses on heterogeneous
quantum networking\, but more specifically on quantum transduction. He re
ceived is Ph.D. in Physics from Case Western Reserve University in Clevel
and\, Ohio in 2022 and a B.S. in Physics and Philosophy from Balwin Walla
ce University in Berea\, Ohio.\n\nAbstract: Quantum computers could be tr
ansformative for a number of applications (encryption\, molecular/biologi
cal simulation\, materials development\, etc.)\, but the computers themse
lves need to be sufficiently large. The problems associated with scaling
these systems depend on the modality of the compute (superconducting qubi
ts\, trapped ions\, etc.). In this talk\, I will briefly walk through the
necessary building blocks for scaling one modality of quantum computer (
superconducting)\, how one might connect it to other modalities\, some of
the ongoing work at AFRL along these lines\, and the problems one encoun
 ters along the way.\n\nhttp://next-to-u.app/events/e23db87e-0f84-4650-a36
