DESCRIPTION:Please join us\n\nThursday\, November 5\, 2026\n\n4:00pm – 5:0
 0pm CST\n\nCRA 12.110\n\nfor a Guest Lecture by\n\nDr. Polina Anikeeva\n\
nMassachusetts Institute of Technology\n\nBioelectronics Tools to Probe B
rain-Body Communication\n\nBidirectional communication between the brain
and the body is essential for maintaining homeostasis\, and it is increas
ingly recognized that sensory signals from the peripheral organs contribu
te to cognitive process such reward\, motivation\, and affect. Although n
umerous technologies have been developed to study brain dynamics\, the to
ols to probe peripheral neural circuits remain sparse. To address this\,
our group is developing multifunctional bioelectronic interfaces for modu
lating and recording gastrointestinal neurophysiology. These tools build
on advances in fiber-based neurotechnology granting optogenetic and pharm
acological access to gut circuits in freely moving mice. Using these gut
fibers\, we uncover contributions of colon-brain vagal circuits in arousa
l and exploration. My talk will also discuss a flexible fiber-based funct
ional imaging platform that enables high-resolution visualization of ente
ric circuits in the colon\, while also revealing vasculature\, motility p
atterns\, and enabling local drug delivery. I will then show the applicat
ion of this platform in a mouse model of colitis\, where it illuminates t
he chronic effects of acute inflammation on enteric neurophysiology under
scoring the need for neuronal biomarkers for conditions such as post-infe
