SUMMARY:Metrics that Mislead: How Accountability Policy Undermines School
 Community
LOCATION:Boston College McGuinn Hall 521\, 140 Commonwealth Ave.\, Chestnu
 t Hill\, MA 02467
DESCRIPTION:For decades\, the dashboards\, test scores\, attendance rates\
, and accountability “report\ncards” that have proliferated across public
education have promised an authoritative\,\nbird’s-eye view of how stude
nts are doing and where to invest resources. Metrics that\nMislead takes
 you inside the hallways\, cafeterias\, classrooms\, and administrative\no
ffices of a modern high school to uncover the mechanisms through which\na
ccountability metrics designed to measure school progress impair school f
unctioning\nand undermine school leaders’ capacity to respond to students
 ’\, teachers’\, and\ncommunity members’ needs.\n\nDrawing on five years o
f participant observation and over 170 intensive interviews with safety o
 fficers\, administrators\, teachers\, and students\, my forthcoming book
shows that the problems facing young people and their schools - including
social isolation\, racialized discipline\, and muted concern for the saf
ety and well-being of girls and LGBTQ+ students - are not simply a matter
of bad actors or bad decisions\, but rather an institutional system in w
hich well-intentioned\, deeply caring school and community leaders become
trapped in a\nmetrics-based false confidence in their knowledge of the c
hallenges facing the\nschool community and how best to invest in solution
