SUMMARY:Archival Research on South and Southeast Asia: Accounts from the F

LOCATION:Sterling Memorial Library Room 117\, International Room\, 120 Hig

DESCRIPTION:Basil Bastaki\, PhD Candidate\, Department of History\n\nA Col
laborative Ethnographic Approach to Archival Research: My Experience with
the Zamindaris of Lower Assam\n\nHow can scholars best access and interp
ret private archives? I describe a “collaborative-ethnographic” approach
suitable for the study of recent history in the global south. Scholars fr
om global north and global south have complementary strengths. Therefore\
, their partnership can improve access to archives\, interpretation of so
urces\, quality of publications\, and an understanding of the politics of
how the publications may be received.\n\nI draw from my experience searc
hing for the private archives of the Zamindars of Lower Assam. Serendipit
ously\, I met with a local scholar\, and we worked together to advance ou
r separate but complementary research agendas. This journey led us throug
h the Zamindar palaces of lower Assam\, various towns where the Zamindari
lineages live\, and ultimately to other archives and interviewees. The e
xperience of speaking with the lineages clarified what sources would be a
vailable\, highlighted discrepancies between their silences and the archi
val record elsewhere\, and illuminated the socio-political context in whi
ch my study will be received.\n\nLayna Chen\, Master's in Environmental D
esign\n\nThe Absence of “Peat”: A Term in Constant Translation\n\nToday\,
Indonesia’s peatlands are understood as globally significant carbon rese
rves and sites of transboundary haze. However\, this understanding is rec
 ent. \n\nhttp://next-to-u.app/events/e7ca02b8-4ada-4aed-b9ad-6044a1e253c1
