SUMMARY:Dr. Lei Tian Distinguished Lecture Series: Joseph Falson (Caltech)
LOCATION:Kimball Hall B11
DESCRIPTION:Thin film quantum matter: unconventional conventional supercon
ductivity and more\n\nIn this presentation I will discuss recent oxide an
d intermetallic thin film materials we have grown in our lab\, including
an array of ultra-thin metals which display magnetic field-induced superc
onductivity\, topological materials which are sufficiently clean to show
the quantum Hall effect\, and two-dimensional materials which display non
-linear transport properties. I will take time to emphasize the correlati
ons between the unique synthesis pathways these compounds take and the ph
ysics they display\, with the goal of connecting an understanding of subt
le structural and chemical distortions with the ability to resolve profou
nd emergent electronic phases.\n\nBio: Joseph Falson is an assistant prof
essor of applied physics and materials science at the California Institut
e of Technology. Prior to joining Caltech in 2020\, he was a postdoctoral
researcher at the Max Planck Institute for Solid State Research studying
the physics of two-dimensional electron systems. He obtained his Ph.D. f
rom the University of Tokyo performing the synthesis and characterization
  of oxide-based high mobility heterostructures.\n\nhttp://next-to-u.app/e
