SUMMARY:Mao’s Cultural War: The Origins of the Cultural Revolution Revisit
 ed
LOCATION:Garrison Hall (GAR) 1.102\, 128 INNER CAMPUS DR \, Austin\, Texas

DESCRIPTION:ABSTRACT\n\nWhy and how Mao Zedong initiated the Cultural Revo
lution remains one of the most enduring puzzles in the history of the Peo
ple’s Republic of China. Existing interpretations have generally placed M
ao’s political intentions and ideological radicalism at the center of exp
lanation\, often treating the cultural conflicts\, leadership struggles\,
and institutional crises of 1965-66 as elements of a political project w
hose basic purposes had already been formed. This talk reconsiders that i
nterpretation by reconstructing the movement’s origins in its immediate h
istorical context. Professor Wu will argue that the Cultural Revolution o
riginated in a militant campaign to transform China’s cultural and ideolo
gical order\, rather than in a premeditated assault on the Party-state. I
t later expanded into a far broader political upheaval through a cumulati
ve\, path-dependent process in which elite conflict\, institutional respo
nses\, and mass political initiatives interacted to redirect and radicali
ze the movement.\n\nABOUT THE SPEAKER\n\nYiching Wu teaches East Asian St
