SUMMARY:Elamite Art Through the Lens of Archaeological Evidence
LOCATION:In person at Stanford
DESCRIPTION:Event is in Persian.\n\nProfessor Bahram Ghadiri examines Elam
ite art as a major body of archaeological evidence for understanding the
cultural\, political\, and religious development of southwestern Iran and
the broader Iranian Plateau. Rather than approaching Elamite art primari
ly as a collection of isolated aesthetic objects\, the presentation situa
tes artistic production within its historical\, geographical\, and social
contexts.\n\nThe lecture begins with an overview of the emergence of Ela
mite political formations and their changing territorial extent from the
late fourth millennium to the first millennium BCE. It considers the rela
tionships among important centers such as Susa\, Anshan\, Haft Tappeh\, C
hogha Zanbil\, and the highland regions associated with Elamite cultural
traditions.\n\nThe second section addresses the principal methodological
challenges involved in interpreting Elamite art. Particular attention is
 given to archaeological context\, chronology\, iconography\, inscriptions
\, patterns of cultural exchange\, and the limitations created by incompl
ete or displaced evidence. The lecture also considers how earlier scholar
ly frameworks have influenced modern interpretations of Elamite artistic
identity.\n\nThe final section examines selected examples of monumental a
 rchitecture\, rock reliefs\, seals\, sculpture\, metalwork\, ceramics\, a
nd representations of music and ritual. These materials illuminate concep
ts of kingship\, religious practice\, social organization\, collective me
 mory\, and\n\nhttp://next-to-u.app/events/f085412b-903e-41ed-b8cb-98f8fef
