SUMMARY:Geology & Environmental Science Colloquium: Dr. Steve McNutt | Uni
 versity of South Florida
LOCATION:Thaw Hall 104\, 3943 O'Hara Street\, Pittsburgh\, PA 15213
DESCRIPTION:Long Swarms and Short Swarms at Volcanoes: Evidence for Differ
ent Processes (part 1) and Estimates of Water in the Hunga Tonga plume (p
art 2)\n\nPresented by Dr. Steve McNutt | Professor\, University of South
Florida\n\nTalk Abstract:\n\nVolcanoes often show earthquake swarms of d
ifferent durations. Long swarms (weeks to months) are characterized by a
low b-value\, suggesting increased pressure at depth. These are followed
by short swarms (hours-days) with higher rates and 30-50 percent VLP even
ts\, suggesting pulses of magma injection. A case study of Hunga Tonga es
timates the amount of water in the enormous plume and uses this to determ
ine energetics of the eruption.\n\nBiography:\n\nSteve McNutt is a volcan
o seismologist who has spent over two decades working with the Alaska Vol
cano Observatory\, studying some of the world's most active and unpredict
able volcanic systems. His research spans an unusually wide range of volc
anic phenomena\, including the source and propagation of volcanic tremor\
 , low-frequency events\, and explosion earthquakes\; the mechanical behav
ior of volcanoes (from eruption periodicity to how earth tides\, sea leve
l changes\, and tectonic stress can trigger eruptions)\; volcano infrasou
nd and volcanic lightning.\n\nToday\, Dr. McNutt coordinates volcano seis
mology research in the Department of Geosciences at the University of Sou
th Florida and has served as Secretary-General of the International Assoc
iation of Volcanology and Chemistry of the Earth's Interior\, helping sha
