SUMMARY:The Civic Life of Trees: Art\, Health\, and the Urban Canopy
LOCATION:Central Library of Rochester and Monroe County Rundel Arts Room\,
  115 South Ave\, Rochester\, NY 14604
DESCRIPTION:What changes when we stop seeing trees as background scenery a
nd begin seeing them as vital participants in civic life?\n\nIn this arti
st talk\, photographer and civic artist Andrea Anderson Gluckman introduc
es Civic Canopy\, an interdisciplinary art project exploring the relation
ships between urban trees\, human health\, community\, and place. Through
  photography\, aerial imagery\, mapping\, research\, and experimental for
ms of civic portraiture and documentation\, Civic Canopy asks us to look
more closely at the trees that share our neighborhoods—and to consider wh
at becomes visible when we do.\n\nDrawing on research into the mental\, p
hysical\, emotional\, and social benefits of trees\, Gluckman will explor
e how interaction with trees can function as a form of health and social
infrastructure\, as well as playing a civic role in urban life.\n\nAt its
heart\, however\, Civic Canopy is an artistic inquiry into attention and
relationship. What can art reveal that data alone cannot? And how might
seeing trees differently change the ways we understand health\, belonging
\, care\, and our place within the more-than-human community?\n\nThe pres
entation is part of a collaborative project from the University of Roches
ter's Institute of Human Health and Environment\, the Program of Dance an
d Movement\, and Andrea Gluckman.\n\nRegister at the event website. Regis
 tration is required.\n\nhttp://next-to-u.app/events/f6312147-05bc-41ec-b4
