SUMMARY:Center for Theory of Quantum Matter Seminar
LOCATION:Duane Physics and Astrophysics G126\, 2000 Colorado Avenue\, Boul
 der\, CO 80309
DESCRIPTION:Motion Meets Quantum Geometry\, presented by Anatoly Polkovnik
ov\n\nFast quantum dynamics and slow classical motion often coexist\, as
in electrons coupled to moving ions. The Born–Oppenheimer approximation d
escribes the fast subsystem using states determined by the instantaneous
configuration of the slow one. But motion itself can change the appropria
te internal state: water in a rotating bucket does not have the same equi
librium as water in a stationary one. I will introduce quantum geometry a
nd explain its connection to familiar pseudoforces\, including inertial a
nd Coriolis forces\, emphasizing that these geometric ideas also apply to
classical systems. Beyond the static Born–Oppenheimer picture\, the geom
etry depends on motion and feeds back on it\, modifying both the fast sta
tes and the slow trajectories. Using simple examples\, I will show how th
is interplay produces collective variables that combine the original fast
and slow degrees of freedom\, providing a new perspective on the emergen
ce of classical motion.\n\nCTQM Seminars start at 12:30pm\, with lunch se
 rved starting at 12pm.\n\nhttp://next-to-u.app/events/f8db555a-24c2-4aec-
