SUMMARY:Exhibition: "Shadows and Light: Symbolist Art in Belgium\; Works f
 rom the Hearn Family Trust"
LOCATION:McMullen Museum of Art\, 2101 Commonwealth Avenue\, Boston\, MA 0
 2135
DESCRIPTION:Showcasing the most important collection of Belgian symbolist
art in private hands—assembled by Charles Hack over more than four decade
s—the exhibition features over 150 major works by Belgian and other Europ
ean artists in their orbit. Shadows and Light charts a world of dualities
: dream and reality\, modernism and tradition\, music and silence\, myste
ry and revelation. Together\, these works offer a counterpart and counter
point to the sun-drenched landscapes of contemporary neo-impressionism\,
asserting a distinct and rival presence in Belgium.\n\nNew research illum
inates the complex world of Belgian artists at the vanguard of the intern
ational symbolist movement of the late nineteenth and early twentieth cen
turies—a pivotal moment in the development of modern art. Composed of ten
“movements\,” the exhibition unfolds in the galleries as a visual sympho
ny with artists engaging with vital issues of modern life\, including que
stions of faith\, social justice\, historical identity\, and psychologica
l analysis. Building on the historic tradition of Belgian and Flemish art
\, the exhibition demonstrates how these artists’ works are innovative in
style and personal vision\, significantly expanding the language of art.
\n\nBelgian artists represented include: Cécile Cauterman\, William Degou
ve de Nuncques\, Léon Frederic\, Fernand Khnopff\, Georges Le Brun\, Xavi
 er Mellery\, Constantin Meunier\, George Minne\, Armand Rassenfosse\, and
Léon Spilliaert. With forty-six works by Spilliaert\, the exhibition see
