About
Regarded by many as the most influential scholar of the Holocaust, Raul Hilberg taught from 1955 to 1991 at the University of Vermont, where he held the John G. McCullough Chair in Political Science. Belonging to the first generation of historians of the Holocaust, Hilberg published his foundational work The Destruction of the European Jews in 1961, which was followed by subsequent revised editions in 1985 and 2003. He was also one of the first academics in the United States to offer courses on the Holocaust, which he taught at UVM beginning in the 1970s. In 1978 Hilberg was appointed by President Jimmy Carter to the United States Holocaust Memorial Council, which initiated plans for the construction of the US Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, DC. It was in honor of his legacy and contributions to the field that the Center for Holocaust Studies at the University of Vermont was founded in 1993.
