About
Join MASH (Military Affiliated Students of Harris) for coffee, donuts, and a Veterans Day morning conversation with Kayla Williams: Army veteran, author, and former Assistant Secretary of Veterans Affairs.
Williams enlisted in the U.S. Army in 2000 and served as an Arabic linguist and signals intelligence specialist with the 101st Airborne Division, deploying to Iraq during the 2003 invasion. She chronicled that experience in her memoir Love My Rifle More Than You: Young & Female in the U.S. Army (2006), and her family's journey through recovery after war in Plenty of Time When We Get Home (2014). From 2021 to 2022, she served as Assistant Secretary for Public and Intergovernmental Affairs at the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.
Williams is on campus for Veterans Day as a guest of David Chrisinger's writing program at Harris. The conversation will explore military service, writing about war and its aftermath, and turning lived experience into public service and veterans policy.
Open to the University of Chicago community, including Harris students, students across the University, and alumni. Members of Women in Public Policy are especially encouraged to attend. Coffee and donuts provided.
