Why do conflicts in Africa’s border regions last so long?
UF geographer Dr. Olivier Walther has spent 20 years studying cross-border trade and conflict across the continent. His latest research tracks political violence in 6,540 African regions from 1997 to 2024, and finds that borderlands aren’t just hideouts for armed groups. They work like infrastructure that keeps conflicts going for years.
Join us as he unpacks why African border disorders continue, and what that means for how the world responds.
