About
This Thursday, November 6th, at 6pm in Alumni 308, the Society for Undergraduate Anthropologists will be hosting a public forum and panel discussion on the proposed changes to Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act. The panel includes local archaeologists who will discuss what Section 106 does, how it works to protect sites, and what we can do to help protect it!
Section 106 plays a central role in protecting historic and archaeological sites by requiring federal agencies to consider the effects that their projects have historic properties. It also ensures that there is consultation with affected communities, including local Tribes and descendants. The proposed Bipartisan American Affordability and Jobs Act threatens to weaken these protections, making it easier for developments, data centers, infrastructure projects, and other construction to move forward quickly and without community input. It is estimated that around 80% of archaeological projects conducted by Cultural Resource Management firms could be eliminated under these proposed changes.
The Senate is scheduled to vote on this legislation on November 9th. We must act now!
Please help spread the word, invite members of your community to attend our forum, and contact your Senators to tell them to VOTE NO on the Bipartisan American Affordability and Jobs Act.
We hope to see you there!
