About
Profiting from Pain: Mass Health Harms and Lawsuits for Profit in America's Civil Justice System
Elizabeth Chamblee Burch is one of the nation’s foremost authorities on mass tort litigation. Her new book, The Pain Brokers (Simon & Schuster, 2026), is a work of investigative journalism exposing a scheme that lured thousands of women into predatory loans and unnecessary surgeries, told through the stories of three women who were failed by the legal system. The book builds on Burch’s two decades of pioneering legal research on how America’s civil justice system handles mass injury. Burch teaches at the University of Georgia School of Law, where she holds the Fuller E. Callaway Chair.
The event is open to the entire Yale community.
Co-hosted by the Solomon Center for Health Law and Policy at Yale Law School and the Yale Health Law and Policy Society (YHeLPS).
