About
Learning Domain: Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion
Residents will take part in an interactive henna program in collaboration with the Cross-Cultural Center at CSUSM. Residents will receive henna designs and learn about the meaning of henna, its traditions, and how it is used in different cultures around the world.
Students will be able to choose their own henna design and have it applied to them, allowing them to leave the event with a unique piece of art that reflects their personality. While waiting for their henna design, residents will receive blank pieces of paper so they can draw their own henna-inspired designs using different patterns and shapes. This activity will allow residents to be creative and get a better idea of how henna artists think and create their designs. We will also be providing mini Pizookies as a treat for residents to enjoy during the program.
The program will encourage residents to talk about cultural identity, traditions, and the importance of respecting and appreciating other cultures. Residents will also be able to share ideas, express themselves through art, learn about campus resources, and connect with others in a welcoming environment.
Learning Outcomes
• Residents will identify at least two traditions or uses connected to henna and understand why henna is important in different cultures.
• Residents will create their own henna-inspired design on a blank piece of paper using different patterns and shapes.
• Residents will work with others by sharing ideas, talking about cultural traditions, and supporting each other while creating their designs.
• Residents will identify at least one resource or opportunity offered by the CSUSM Cross-Cultural Center that supports cultural learning, inclusion, or community building.
This program will give residents a hands-on way to learn about henna through art and cultural education. Drawing their own designs will give residents something fun and creative to do while they wait for their henna. It will also help them understand how henna artists come up with their designs. We will provide mini Pizookies as a treat to make the event feel more fun and welcoming. By working with the Cross-Cultural Center, this program will help residents learn about different cultures, meet new people, and connect as a floor community.
