About
Jackson County's Project F.I.R.E and Cullowhee United Methodist Church are looking for volunteers to assist with their weekly deliveries on Tuesdays between 12:30 to 2:30. Volunteers can help split and stack firewood using the hydraulic splitters (unintimidating and much easier than it sounds). For the weekly splitting opportunities, the max for volunteers is about 12 people. Volunteers can just show up at the site to help! Weekly splitting opportunities usually have snacks available. Come out to help split and stack firewood on Tuesdays. Personal Protective Equipment and other needed supplies provided.
Recommended for volunteer activities that require manual labor and/or lifting heavier items: Wear comfortable closed-toe or steel/composite toe shoes or boots and clothes that you can work in and do not mind if they happen to get a little dirty.
Cullowhee United Methodist Church partners with Project F.I.R.E. because helping keep the rural elderly of Jackson County warm helps their church live out the core value of loving their neighbors.
Project F.I.R.E (Fuel Intervention for Rural Elderly), part of the services offered by the Jackson County Department on Aging, cuts, splits, and delivers firewood to low-income seniors who rely on wood as their primary heating or cooking fuel. It operates with the help of volunteer groups, distributing around 200 loads of wood annually across the county with the help of partners like Cullowhee United Methodist Church.
