Please note that this exact lecture will be held from 8:00 am – 8:50 am and again at 10:20 am – 11:10 am.
Generative AI is changing mathematics education, from the tools students use to the ways teachers are prepared.
In the first part of this lecture, Dr. Sheunghyun Yeo shares insights from his recent work in Korea, including AI chatbot simulations for preservice teachers, AI-based platforms and digital tools for elementary mathematics, research on teachers’ AI agency in purposeful AI use, and professional development programs supporting in-service teachers in teaching mathematics with AI.
In the second part, Dr. Yeo examines the implications for mathematical problem solving and problem posing, arguing that when AI can solve textbook problems in seconds and encourages cognitive outsourcing, these practices must be rethought rather than simply supplemented with new tools.
