About
Generative AI is flooding our information ecosystem with what scholars and others call “AI slop”: machine-generated output that tends to degrade human creativity and burden social relations and institutions. In this talk, Woodrow Hartzog unpacks the concept of AI slop and explores why it has become a growing concern for policymakers. The future of AI governance might hinge upon lawmakers understanding the cause and costs of AI slop. Drawing on emerging debates in both the United States and the European Union, Hartzog examines how lawmakers and institutions are attempting to identify, regulate and contain the harms of AI while also trying to preserve innovation and democratic values.
