About
The Power of Dissent: Democracy, Protest, and 90 Years of the Syracuse Peace Council
Democracy does not begin and end at the ballot box. It is built, sustained, and protected in the streets, in community centers, and through collective action.
To explore the vital role of grassroots activism, Democracy Matters SU proudly welcomes Lee Cridland of the Syracuse Peace Council (SPC) for a special evening discussing the undeniable power of protesting, dissent, and community organizing in shaping a healthy democracy.
This event coincides with a historic milestone: the 90th Anniversary of the Syracuse Peace Council. Founded in 1936, the SPC is recognized as the oldest continuously operating grassroots peace and justice organization in the United States. For nine decades, it has been a cornerstone of activism in Central New York, proving that local organizing can drive national and global conversations.
During this engaging session, Lee Cridland will unpack the history and mechanics of effective dissent, exploring:
• The Mechanics of Change: How protests and civil disobedience force critical issues onto the public agenda.
• Building Power Locally: The day-to-day work of community organizing that turns brief moments of outrage into sustained movements.
• The Legacy of the SPC: Lessons learned from 90 years of anti-war, social justice, and environmental activism in Syracuse.
• Your Role in the Movement: Practical advice for student organizers and citizens looking to make an impact in today’s political climate.
Whether you are a seasoned organizer, a student studying political science, or simply a citizen looking to better understand the forces that drive social progress, this event will provide actionable insights into how everyday people can challenge the status quo and advocate for a more just society.
