About
107 Capen Hall
This 4 hour intensive workshop is designed to assist participants in communicating their science to broad audiences. Participants will analyze example components of effective storytelling about scientific research, frame their ideas to tell their own story, practice telling their story to peers, and give and receive feedback on their story. The facilitators will review best practices when discussing one’s research to a broad audience and the various pitfalls postdocs and scholars might encounter as they communicate outside of their lab.
Included topics:
• The importance of and framing research for both scientific and non-scientific audiences
• English language and rhetoric of storytelling
• Use of analogies
• Hooking the audience – making the story interesting and memorable
• Organizing the story – a 4-step approach
• Strategies and components of effective delivery
This session is intended for PhD students and Postdoctoral Scholars only. Seating is limited to 50 participants, and pre-registration is required. Light refreshments will be provided.
