Winner, African Studies Association Film Prize, 2024Thomas Sankara Award, First Place, at FESPACO (Africa’s largest and oldest film festival), 2024IMDB Summary: Wanjugu Kimathi is an airport customer care representative who has a special inheritance. Her father, Dedan Kimathi, was the legendary leader of the 1950s Kenyan Independence Movement against British rule (the Mau Mau), who inspired anti-colonial movements worldwide, including a young Nelson Mandela.
In 1957, the British hanged him and secretly dumped his body, the whereabouts were never made public. Since then, Dedan Kimathi's wife, Mukami, has been searching for his remains to give him a proper burial. However, now almost 90, she is too frail to continue and so her youngest daughter, Wanjugu, takes over the quest.
The 2023 documentary Our Land, Our Freedom, directed by Meena Nanji and Zippy Kimundu, tells the story of Wanjugu's journey.

Reviewer Quotes
“This documentary will move you, anger you, and potentially even radicalize you.” —Abigail Arunga, SinemaFocus (African Film Press)
“We live in a world where colonization has robbed us of our land, but not our voices. Our Land, Our Freedom is an epic and intimate film about the quest to consecrate the Mau Mau rebellion against British rule in Kenya. About time, I say. I am honored to be the executive producer of the film, directed beautifully by Meena Nanji and Zippy Kimundu.” —Mira Nair, director of Monsoon Wedding
