About
The Agora invites Harris graduate students to join Leonard M. Lopoo, Professor at Syracuse University’s Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs and author ofWanting Children: Family-Planning Policies and the Engineering of America’s Population(University of Chicago Press, 2026), for an interactive discussion on family planning, fertility trends, and public policy.
Building on Agora’s previous dialogue on declining birth rates and global fertility trends, this event will explore how governments shape family-planning policies, the historical and political considerations behind these interventions, and the trade-offs between public policy objectives and individual autonomy.
The session will combine an introduction to the speaker’s research with a moderated discussion and audience Q&A, encouraging students to engage critically with the evidence, examine competing perspectives, and connect historical experiences to contemporary policy challenges. The event is intended for Harris graduate students interested in public policy, economics, sociology, population studies, and related fields.
