About
“Exit Strategies” brings together the work of Melanie Bisbach, Danielle Chandler and A.J. Miller, three artists whose sculptures and installations offer plans of escape in a chaotic world and trace the echoes of an absent subject.
Each artist uses craft-based techniques and materials, exploring new coping mechanisms for the stressful environments in which they live. Bisbach’s porcelain sculptures isolate botanical forms from the living things the works describe, fixing blades of grass in permanence to be read. Chandler’s ceramic and textile works construct inner architectures. Her installation invites visitors to enter for a time, to be vulnerable and to choose what to guard and what to reveal. Similarly, Miller’s commentary on domestic craft treats the hobby as a fragile form of leisure in an uncertain economy.
“Exit Strategies” constructs a threshold that allows viewers to find themselves outside their reality.
The exhibition will be on view Nov. 6-22. An opening will be held on Friday, Nov. 6, from 6-9 p.m. The gallery is open Fridays and Saturdays from noon to 6 p.m. and by appointment.
