In the idyllic backyard of a Midwestern home, Joe Keller lives a comfortable life as a successful manufacturer and a doting patriarch. But beneath the surface of the post-WWII American Dream lies a devastating secret. Years ago, Joe’s factory shipped defective airplane parts, causing the deaths of twenty-one fighter pilots—a crime for which his former business partner sits in prison, while Joe walked free.

As the Kellers await news of their eldest son, Larry, who went missing in action, his surviving brother Chris prepares to propose to Larry’s former fiancée. The impending marriage brings old ghosts back to the surface. When a surprise visitor threatens to dismantle Joe’s carefully constructed alibi, a lifetime of denial collapses into a single, breathtaking night of reckoning.
