DESCRIPTION: Mathew Dryhurst is an artist and fellow at the Institute for Ethics in AI at Oxford University. As a widely consulted voice on AI policy, copyright, and the political economy of cultural production, he advocates for data rights and the governance of generative AI.
Join us for an afternoon workshop led by Dryhurst, who will teach and talk about the intersection of creative practice, AI, and artist guardrails in working with advancing technology. He will demonstrate how he integrates AI tools into his studio practice by training custom models from a collection of images, sounds, and references to show how data, models, and computing fit together in a working process.
The session will also address the questions and doubts these tools raise, including what changes for artists and what does not, why making the data and deciding what to make remain the real work, and how disciplines such as music, drawing, and design can shape the results. Students will have a chance to ask questions and engage with one of the leading artists exploring artist identity and intellectual property in our world of advanced machine learning and algorithms.
