About
In its close focus on the mythologies surrounding mermaids, sea serpents, and other slimy oceanic creatures, including, most notably, eels, this chapter by Dr. Christopher Pastore provides an environmental history and cultural geography of the North Atlantic from pre-history to the age of exploration. Counterpoising geological and biological understandings of the Atlantic’s creation with Native American, African, and European legend, it highlights the ways slimy things, both real and imagined, shaped the contours of an expanding Atlantic world.
