What are the boundaries between desire and violence? In Un amor (2023), Spanish director Isabel Coixet follows Nat, a woman who moves to a small rural village, where an encounter with a neighbor brings her face to face with the complexities of intimacy, vulnerability, and power. As she navigates unfamiliar relationships and the expectations imposed upon her, the boundaries between desire and coercion, freedom and submission, become increasingly difficult to define. Through an unsettling exploration of sexuality, gender, and social judgment, this film raises questions about how violence can become entangled with desire, and how the need for connection can expose the contradictions and vulnerabilities of human relationships.
This screening of Isabel Coixet’s Un amor (2023) is part of Love in the Lens? Romance and Resistance in Latin American and Iberian Cinema (PORT 2161 / SPAN 2095 / FILM 2161 / LAST 2161/ WGSS 2161). The screening will be introduced by students of Spanish and Portuguese in three languages: Portuguese, Spanish, and English.
