About
Join us for a lecture by Professor Jesús Velasco, Augustus R. Street Professor of Spanish and Portuguese at Yale University who will present, “Fictions of Legal Subjecthood.”
Jesús Velasco will speak about the question of legal subjectivity and how techniques of law-writing inform experimentation in the medieval construction of a legal subject. Velasco will delve into some of those techniques, including the implementation of some quite creative fictional devices to codify the law (with specific references to specific codifications and legal questiones) and the articulation of bodies of philosophical knowledge to comprehend the legal responsibilities of the legal subject—for instance, the inclusion of sensorial and post-sensorial operations as juridical operations.
This lecture is featured during the 45th International Haskins Conference of the Haskins Society (Friday, November 6 - Sunday, November 8, 2026). Presiding, Hugh Thomas, University of Miami. In partnership with the Henry King Stanford Distinguished Professors in the Humanities Lecture Series.
