About
Join us as Yale World Fellow and journalist Lina Sinjab leads a discussion with author Kim Ghattas about her book, The Best Kind of American.
From the 1982 Israeli invasion of Lebanon to Operation Epic Fury, Ghattas tells the story of four decades of US-Israel vs. Iran confrontation, a geopolitical tragedy woven together with the human tragedy of the 1984 assassination in Beirut of Malcolm Kerr, beloved Middle East scholar and president of the American University of Beirut. Her book tells the story of Benjamin Netanyahu as deputy ambassador to Washington in 1982; the unknown story of Imad Mughniyeh's first-ever kidnapping; the incredible strength of Ann Kerr looking for answers; the callousness of Lebanon's warlords; the integrity of unsung Lebanese heroes, and American presidents from Reagan to Trump grappling with the Islamic Republic of Iran.
The book has already received great praise. Kai Bird called it "a miraculous achievement," Scott Anderson said it was "Masterful," and William Dalrymple described it as a "Levantine In Cold Blood." The New York Times also listed it among 29 non-fiction books to read this fall.
