About
For the past few years, Honors has worked with the Wilmington African American Community Remembrance Project to research the history of Wilmington's Black community, and part of this work has included documenting and honoring veterans.
On Saturday, November 7th, join us as we share this research and commemorate African Americans with Wilmington connections who served the country in times of peace and war. This year’s program will share the story of the city’s USO for African American service members during WWII. It will also tell the stories of notable local African American veterans, including Pearl Harbor survivor George Bland, Greensboro sit-in leader Major General Joseph McNeil, and jazz legend and Tuskegee Airman Percy Heath.
Co-sponsored with the City of Wilmington's Parks and Recreation Department, the event takes place at the Hannah Block Historic USO/Community Arts Center, located at 120 S. 2nd Street. The program will run from 1 to 3 pm and includes food and drinks at the conclusion of the event. This counts as a cultural event for students in HON 110 but is open to all.
