About
How do you build an identity the law refuses to recognize? Using “speculative demography,” a method built from more than 9,000 archival records, Natasha McPherson follows the Creole women of Jim Crow New Orleans who did it in their homes, through kinship, community, labor, and the stories they told the census taker. In the spirit of Sterling Stuckey, she shows that Black political thought was made by women in the household long before it reached the courtroom. A celebration of Making Creole (LSU Press) Follows.
