About
This 3-hour session, taught by KU School of Social Welfare adjunct instructor and veteran Dr. Carol Meza, will prepare participants to engage and assess military service members and their families, as the foundation for effective social work practice.
Engaging and assessing military service members and their families - the foundation for effective practice - begins with understanding military culture, differences within the military that can contribute to distance and misunderstanding, military systems and paperwork practitioners must navigate to connect clients to needed resources and services, and markers of trauma that can manifest in clients’ lives.
Practitioners with this essential knowledge, solid relational skills, and a value commitment to meet the needs and elevate the strengths of military service members and their families can support these key constituencies and help the social work profession fulfill our obligations to these families and communities.
