Rockets in the "Magic Valley": Starbase and the Ninth Cycle of Boom and Bust
What does SpaceX's Starbase look like when viewed from the expansive history of the Rio Grande Valley, including previous booms sold as dreams? In this talk, I trace my path from collaborative filmmaking with Aboriginal communities in the Western Desert of Australia to my current fieldwork in Brownsville, where I am studying Starbase as part of a centuries-long pattern of colonial promise, extraction, and resistance. I share what I'm learning on the ground and in archives, as well as consider methods, ethics, and what an anthropologist owes the places they study.
