About
"One Step Away: The Reality of Financial Survival" is a campus-wide interactive workshop centered around a web-based decision-making game modeled after poverty simulations like SPENT. Participants start the month with a modest starting budget (e.g., $1,000), a single job, and a family to support.
Using their phones or laptops, players must navigate 30 days of real-life scenarios—choosing between paying a utility bill or buying medication, repairing a flat tire to get to work or paying rent on time, or taking unpaid time off to care for a sick child. The game tracks real-time indicators for Bank Balance, Health/Stress Levels, and Family Stability to demonstrate firsthand how late fees, compounding interest, and sudden medical costs erode financial stability. Projected live stats will show what percentage of participants make it to Day 30 without falling below the poverty line.
