About
Bringing together scholars from Southern California, China, Korea, the UK, and Guam, this conference explores cultural mediation and East–West encounters in the early modern Pacific. Through the lives and intellectual pursuits of Western missionaries and the work of Chinese and Korean intellectuals, we examine how knowledge moved across cultures in this age of global convergence. Special attention goes to antiquities and canons, including how Greco-Roman antiquity shaped European views of China and helped introduce European culture to late Ming audiences. The conference also considers the tension between the creation of global narratives and the attention to indigenous identities and local perspectives.
The conference is sponsored by the Department of Classics, the Levan Institute for the Humanities, the Center for the Premodern World, the School of Religion, the Institute for Advanced Catholic Studies, the Department of East Asian Languages and Culture, the Early Modern Studies Institute, and Nova Forum.
