About
This Grand Rounds session will provide an opportunity to engage in an interactive discussion of a clinical case involving equine-assisted psychotherapy with a young adult client, presented by Dr. Stephanie Harness-Gambill. Dr. Harness-Gambill is a licensed clinical social worker with more than 20 years of experience working with children, adolescents, and adults. She specializes in individual and family therapy for mood disorders, grief, and trauma, utilizing modalities such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), and Equine Assisted Psychotherapy (EAP). She is a PATH Intl. Equine Specialist in Mental Health and Learning (ESMHL) and is Level 2 trained through Natural Lifemanship. Dr. Harness-Gambill has incorporated horses and miniature donkeys into her practice for the past six years.
The case involves her work with a young adult female and her horse partner, Goya, and highlights the dynamics of moving therapy outside the traditional setting alongside a 1,500-pound partner. The presentation will explore how the experiential and relational components of equine-assisted work shape the therapeutic process, the therapeutic relationship, and the clinical decisions involved in conducting therapy outside the office.
Students will have opportunities to consider their own clinical conceptualizations of the case, identify potential assessment and intervention strategies, discuss the role of the horse as a partner in the therapeutic relationship, and explore the practical, ethical, and safety considerations of practicing outside the traditional clinical setting. Students will also have ample opportunity to ask questions about the case and engage in discussion.
