About
The New Haven City Burial Ground offers visitors a respite in its serene and beautifully manicured landscape surrounding thousands of stone memorials carved over the past four centuries. Casual visitors enjoy the wide variety of gravestone styles, trees, and plantings they encounter, perhaps pausing to read inscriptions and think about the families who made contributions to New Haven and the region. Others, particularly those interested in material culture, may be more curious: How and when did all of this get in here? Who was in charge? Who created, chose, and placed these physical objects? What’s not here?

That’s where the available records—in paper, in stone, and online—can tell the stories of things both seen and unseen, as well as pose other questions. Archivist Sandra Markham will talk about where to look, what you might discover, and how she has found answers to her own curiosities after more than three decades of poking around Grove Street Cemetery.
This session is produced by the Friends of Grove Street Cemetery and sponsored by the Beinecke Library and the New Haven Museum. Michael Morand will host and Emma Norden will also participate by sharing about the resources in the Whitney Library at the New Haven Museum.
