About
Organized by Johanna Nieto-Rojas of UC Riverside's Department of Hispanic Studies as part of the Center for Ideas and Society's Archives of Bodies / Embodied Archives Research Collaborative, this interdisciplinary symposium brings together artists and scholars to explore how memory is preserved, transmitted, and transformed through embodied, sensory, and material practices.
How do bodies, practices, and territories bear witness to histories of violence and displacement while opening possibilities for care and other forms of relationality? Featuring María del Rosario Acosta López, Carolina Pinzón Rivera, and Antonio Catrileo, the symposium explores distinct embodied practices—listening; kipará, Emberá body painting; and witral, Mapuche weaving. These perspectives invite participants to reconsider what constitutes an archive, how testimonies become legible, and which memories are activated, made audible, and preserved.
The program includes presentations, a coffee break, and a collective conversation with audience Q&A.
With support from: Center for Ideas and Society, Department of Hispanic Studies, Health Humanities and Disability Justice Lab, and Río Junto Latin American Art Collective.
