Title: A probabilistic algorithm for air-sea momentum and heat fluxes
Speaker: Dr. Jiarong Wu, New York University
Abstract: Accurately quantifying air-sea fluxes is important for understanding air-sea interactions and improving coupled weather and climate systems. I will talk about our recent work (Wu et al. 2026 GRL) that develops a probabilistic algorithm for air-sea momentum and heat fluxes, trained on in-situ eddy-covariance measurements using neural networks. Unlike deterministic bulk algorithms, the probabilistic framework explicitly captures the high variability inherent in air-sea fluxes, and enables stochastic parameterizations by sampling from the predicted distributions. We demonstrate the application in a single column model of the upper ocean as well as in a comprehensive climate model.
Another gap in current flux modeling is the treatment of ocean waves (sea state), which are costly to simulate in online coupled atmosphere-ocean models. If time permits, I will briefly discuss ongoing work that addresses this using a diffusion model to provide efficient sea state sampling capabilities.
