Can psychedelics actually change the structure of the brain?
Article: Psychedelics Promote Structural and Functional Neural Plasticity
Join the Neuroscience Club as we continue our exploration of psychedelics and their effects on the brain! This month, we'll discuss the research article “Psychedelics Promote Structural and Functional Neural Plasticity” by Ly et al. (2018).
We'll examine how compounds such as LSD, DMT, and psilocin may promote neuroplasticity by encouraging neuronal growth, increasing synaptic connections, and influencing pathways involved in learning and brain adaptation. We'll also explore what these findings could mean for future treatments of depression, PTSD, and other mental health conditions.
Together, we'll critically evaluate the study's findings, discuss its limitations, and consider how discoveries from cellular and animal research might translate into clinical applications.
No neuroscience expertise required! Whether you're passionate about brain research or simply curious about the science behind psychedelics, all are welcome to join the conversation!
