Title: The Same Idea, Everywhere: An Invitation to Category Theory
Abstract: What do the greatest common divisor of two numbers, the Cartesian product of two sets, and the logical conjunction “and” have in common? More than you might think. In this talk we will see that all three come from a single definition, one that never mentions numbers, ordered pairs, or truth values, and only describes how other things map in. This is the basic idea of category theory: understand an object by how it relates to everything else. Along the way we will turn gcd into lcm by reversing arrows, see the chain rule from calculus in a new light, and make precise why some isomorphisms feel “natural” while others do not. No background beyond calculus and some linear algebra is needed.
